Info about Uzbekistan: The region now known as Uzbekistan was home to Iranian nomads in the first millennium B.C. Through the course of history the region was invaded by the likes of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and the Tamerlane. The Uzbeks were however a perseverant people who continued to build their cities and commercial centers. In 1924 however the entire region of Uzbekistan was conquered by Russia and converted into a socialist republic. Like many of those regions that were subject to Soviet Domination Uzbekistan too gained its independence with the collapse of the Union. Drained of its natural resources the country now faces great challenges for recovery.
