Info about French Guiana: The French Guiana is a far away place that intrigued many explorers including the Christopher Columbus as well as the Dutch and French. The inhospitable jungle conditions posed great difficulty to the explorers many of whom died as a result of deadly diseases that prevailed in the region. The French Guiana basically served as a penal colony where the French government would hold their prisoners. It was in 1946 that France declared the French Guiana to be an overseas department of the country with representation in the French National assembly. Much of the region’s population lives around the coastal areas even today.
