Info about Dominican Republic: The Dominican Republic is yet another nation discovered at the hands of Christopher Columbus. The region served as the major launching base for much of the Spanish expeditions during the 1400s. Slave trade and disease took over the area as a result of the Spanish expeditions. The local people suffered a great deal and the indigenous Arawak people were completely eradicated from their roots. It was not until 1844 that the region gained full control of its governance and became officially established as the Dominican Republic. The following years saw a series of dictators rise and fall in power with democracy finally being introduced in 1978.
